The Renaissance Collective has produced three comprehensive reports examining critical issues affecting Black communities in Westchester County, with each report focusing on distinct yet interconnected challenges:

The “Black Economics Must Matter” report reveals significant economic disparities, showing Black households earn only 56% of white household incomes and own just 3% of businesses in the county, despite comprising 17% of the population. It highlights how redirecting Black spending power (projected to reach $1.7 trillion by 2030) back into Black communities could transform economic outcomes.

The “Black Education Must Matter” report documents educational gaps where Black students have a 78% graduation rate compared to 91% for white students, face disproportionate disciplinary actions, and experience significant achievement gaps in standardized testing. The report emphasizes the need for expanded vocational education opportunities, particularly given projected workforce demands in trades and technical fields.

The “Black Health Must Matter” report exposes alarming health disparities, with Black residents having the highest mortality rates (727 per 100,000), significantly higher rates of chronic diseases, and reduced life expectancy (3.6 years shorter than county average). The crisis is exemplified by Mount Vernon, the city with the largest Black population, lacking a fully operational hospital for over a decade.

The importance of these reports lies in their interconnected analysis – showing how economic inequality, educational disparities, and health outcomes are deeply intertwined and mutually reinforcing. They provide evidence-based policy recommendations while emphasizing that addressing any single issue requires understanding and tackling all three simultaneously. The reports serve as both a call to action and a blueprint for creating sustainable, equitable solutions that could transform Black communities in Westchester County.

Each report reinforces the fundamental message that systemic change requires comprehensive approaches addressing multiple factors simultaneously – better healthcare access requires economic opportunity, better educational outcomes require healthy students, and economic advancement requires both education and health. Together, they present a holistic vision for advancing Black community development and wellbeing in Westchester County.
